The Spanish-Brazilian midfield player Marcos Senna on September 1st visited the Pope Francis in Vatican along with the other athletes participating in the first Partido Interreligioso por la Paz, an initiative led by the Pope aiming at promoting peace in the world. The Pope Francis, who did not attend to the match in the Rome Olympic stadium, met with the players in the Aula Pablo VI in Vatican in order to give them a blessing and an olive tree of peace, which was planted in the field. The charity meeting started at 21:45 and was inaugurated by the Pope through a video broadcasted a couple of minutes before the game. Teams that took part in the match were formed by the NGO and were called ¨Scholas Occurentes¨ and “Fundación Pupi”. Marcos Senna played during the second part of the game for ¨Scholas Occurentes¨. Marcos Senna was honored to meet the Pope Francis – ¨I believe it is a great initiative to promote peace in the world
through sports like football. I am glad to represent values that are important for my foundation, everything I have learned at Villarreal, my current club the New York Cosmos and the NASL North American league at this historic event¨ – says Senna. The audience enjoyed watching the match that ended with a score 6-3 for the team “Pupi”. This historic game reunited many football stars like Maradona, Roberto Baggio, Simeone, Iván Zamorano, Samuel Eto´o, Shevchenko, Alessandro Del Piero, Andrea Pirlo, Gianluigi Buffon, Zanetti, Carlos Valderrama, Iván Córdoba and others. Also, the funds raised during the event will be donated to the project “Una alternativa de vida” in order to create a network of schools in Buenos Aires and give thousands of children a future.
